The existing buildings are being cleared to make way for a 26-story hotel with 340 rooms, just steps from the Empire State Building and one of the busiest shopping areas in New York.
The project had been tied up in a financial dispute that put the property at risk of foreclosure, but Sutton’s Wharton Properties settled the issue and regained control of the site.
Now the demolition filings are in and the project is moving forward.
For Sutton, one of New York’s biggest Orthodox Jewish real estate owners, it marks another major Midtown development in one of Manhattan’s most valuable locations.
