Jewish filmmaker Steven Spielberg is getting a bigger role behind the next Transformers movie, as Paramount puts him in charge of its creative direction alongside longtime producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
The movie series has earned more than $5.4 billion worldwide, and the studio is also talking with Michael Bay about returning to direct after he made the first five films.
Spielberg has been an executive producer throughout the series, but the new assignment gives him a more active role in shaping its next chapter. The film is being developed from a script by Jason Fuchs, with the story set in the present day.
No release date has been announced, and Bay’s return is not yet confirmed.
