Her team, “Team Susan Survives,” joined Swim Across America, where the full event raised over $485,000 for UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals in San Francisco and Oakland.
Helmrich survived cancer at 21, again at 42 and a third time at 53. She brought together swimmers and other supporters and was the event’s top individual fundraiser.
She grew up in a Jewish home that kept kosher and first learned to swim at a Jewish day camp. Decades later, she is using that same love of swimming to help children facing cancer.
