Silverstein signed a $3.2 billion, 99-year lease for the World Trade Center only six weeks before the attacks. He survived because his wife convinced him to attend a medical appointment instead of visiting the towers that morning.

The new 2 World Trade Center will rise 55 stories and contain more than two million square feet, with space for as many as 10,000 workers.

American Express will own and occupy the building as its global headquarters, while Silverstein Properties leads its development.

The project is expected to create 3,200 construction jobs and contribute approximately $5.9 billion to New York City’s economy. It is scheduled to open in 2031.
