Amazon may purchase up to $60 billion in Qualcomm chips, technology and manufacturing services for its AWS data centers. Qualcomm will help Amazon create custom technology capable of running powerful AI systems faster and more efficiently.

As Amazon places orders, it can earn the right to purchase up to 25 million Qualcomm shares for $161.26 each, a potential $4.03 billion investment. Rights covering 3.75 million shares have already vested because of Amazon’s initial commitments. If Amazon eventually acquires every share, it would own approximately 2.3 percent of Qualcomm.

Qualcomm was founded in 1985 by seven technology experts, including Jewish engineers Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi. Their inventions helped transform global wireless communication. More than 40 years later, the company they helped build is competing to power the world’s largest AI data centers.
