The 150 billion Colombian peso donation, worth about $48 million, will be used to repair and rebuild hospitals and schools in areas badly damaged by the earthquake.

Gilinski leads Colombia’s richest family and has built a fortune estimated at $14.7 billion. The major donation was announced by Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella after he spoke with the billionaire.

The earthquake has killed around 300 people and injured more than 4,000, while tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed across the country.

Gilinski’s contribution will focus on rebuilding essential public services, putting tens of millions of dollars from one of Colombia’s most powerful business families directly into the country’s recovery.
