The project, called Stargate Argentina, would be OpenAI’s first Stargate center in Latin America and one of the largest technology projects in Argentina’s history. Its powerful computers would help train and operate future AI systems used across the region.
Argentina’s Patagonia region offers several major advantages, as cold weather that reduces cooling costs, enormous amounts of open land and access to wind, water and natural-gas energy.
The $25 billion would not pay for one building. It would cover years of construction, computer chips, servers, power equipment and internet connections. Local company Sur Energy would build the project and raise the money, while OpenAI could become its main customer.
For now, the two companies have signed an early agreement, but the final contract, location and financing have not been completed.
