KKR first invested in USI in 2017, when the insurance company was valued at about $4.3 billion. Over the years, KKR put in more money and became USI’s largest shareholder as the company expanded.
Now Aon is buying USI for $17 billion in cash. KKR says the deal will give the firm about $3.3 billion in after-tax cash and roughly $2 billion in adjusted profit.
KKR also says its original 2017 investment will return about six times the money it put in. During KKR’s ownership, USI nearly tripled its revenue, doubled its workforce and completed more than 90 acquisitions.
Kravis, KKR’s Jewish cofounder and executive chairman, is worth roughly $13 billion. The USI sale is another major Wall Street win for the investment giant he helped build.
