New York State is committing $2.2 billion over five years to help cover Maimonides’ losses, pay employees and keep the 711-bed hospital running. The hospital serves a large Orthodox Jewish population in Borough Park, along with patients from surrounding Brooklyn communities.

The takeover faced strong opposition from Orthodox Jewish leaders and local residents who worried that Maimonides could lose some of the religious services that have served Jewish patients for generations.

NYC Health + Hospitals says that will not happen. Officials promised to keep Maimonides’ kosher kitchen and continue providing end-of-life care according to Jewish religious traditions.

The deal still faces legal challenges from opponents seeking to block it. If completed, Maimonides would join NYC Health + Hospitals, which already operates 11 public hospitals across the city.
