The two met privately in New York and discussed several major issues facing the country, including housing, immigration and the high cost of living, according to the Associated Press.
The meeting carries added political weight because Democrats have a chance to take control of the House in November. If they win, Jeffries is in position to become Speaker of the House, giving him enormous power over legislation and investigations involving the Trump administration.
Kushner also suggested that Jeffries meet with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles as a follow-up, potentially opening another direct line between Democratic leadership and the White House.
Kushner has no formal position in the administration but continues to serve as an outside adviser and envoy to President Donald Trump. He and Jeffries have worked together before, including during Trump’s first administration on bipartisan criminal justice reform.
The private meeting shows Kushner continuing to play an influential role behind the scenes as Washington prepares for the possibility that Democrats could take control of the House and dramatically change the balance of power in Washington.
