Andreessen Horowitz owns more than 17% of OpenRouter, according to people familiar with the company. At an $8 billion sale price, that stake would be worth close to $1.5 billion.
The firm got its large ownership position by investing early in OpenRouter, an AI platform that lets users access and compare different AI models in one place. Andreessen Horowitz reportedly invested about $20 million in the startup less than two years ago.
Stripe is now pursuing OpenRouter in what would be one of the biggest AI acquisitions of 2026. The deal has not yet been completed, meaning Andreessen Horowitz has not received the $1.5 billion payout yet.
If the acquisition closes near the reported price, it would turn one of Andreessen Horowitz’s relatively recent AI investments into one of the venture capital firm’s biggest and fastest wins.
