“Portrait of a Lady” belonged to Dutch-Jewish art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, whose collection was looted after the Nazis invaded the Netherlands in 1940.

The breakthrough came in 2025, when a Dutch journalist spotted the painting in an online house listing in Argentina. It was hanging in the home of a Nazi official’s daughter.

On September 4, 2026, a court approved an agreement under which the daughter and her husband gave up all claims to the artwork, clearing its return to Goudstikker’s daughter-in-law, Marei von Saher.

The family plans to allow a public exhibition in Argentina before receiving the painting, helping teach others about the Nazis’ theft of Jewish property.
