Landau made the proposal during a meeting this week with Ger Rebbe Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh Alter, one of the most influential ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders in Israel. According to reports, Landau also suggested taking the dispute beyond Israel by filing complaints against the country at the International Criminal Court in The Hague over what supporters describe as unequal enforcement of the draft law and the arrests of demonstrators.
The proposed fund would pay for legal representation for yeshiva students facing arrest or prosecution under the new draft enforcement measures. Landau reportedly pledged to provide the $1 million together with several associates.
According to the report, the Ger Rebbe did not respond directly to Landau’s proposal during the meeting, but he also did not publicly reject it. The discussion comes as Israel continues debating military service requirements for ultra-Orthodox Jewish men following recent court rulings and increased government enforcement.
Landau, a prominent businessman and philanthropist from the Satmar Hasidic community, has previously supported religious institutions in Israel. In the past, he also provided his private jet for the Ger Rebbe during fundraising trips to the United States for Israeli yeshivas.
